A big welcome to Waddle's latest engineering recruit, Julien. Joining us in these unusual times, he is yet to set foot in the 'Waddle house' in an official capacity, and is currently our first virtual Waddler.
Hopefully in the not too distant post-COVID future, we'll all be back together in Chippendale and we can give him a proper welcome. For now, we all know him well from our frequent video calls as the Waddler with the most impressive balcony view (see above). Julien brings great experience and technical wisdom and we're looking forward to the huge contribution he'll make.
A big welcome to the team! How has life in the Waddle house been so far?
Joining Waddle has been both very exciting and ... strange! It's my first time working for a virtual company. I hear rumours Waddle actually has an office, but I don't believe them.
Who is Julien Fourment? Do you have any hobbies? Secret talents?
I grew up in the south of France on the French Riviera and when I finally got bored of these lavish parties on luxury yachts, I decided to move to Australia and experience something different. I love traveling and I'm an ocean lover. I've been scuba diving a LOT but recently decided to ditch the tanks and see how far I could go by just holding my breath. The answer is: not very far. So I'm training regularly at the pool and spend most of my free time face down in the water. Sounds fun, right?
Tell us a bit about what brings you to Waddle. What were you doing before you got here?
I started my career a long, long time ago in a start-up environment in San Francisco (the dot-com boom anyone?). After that I worked for big corporations in France - mostly in the travel industry. Then I moved to Australia, where I joined Tyro and worked for the last 5 years. I'm now closing the loop by joining a start-up again and this is super exciting!
Fun fact: I started at Tyro on the exact same day as (fellow new Waddler) Horia!
What is your first impression of Waddle? The platform? The team?
I've been impressed by the quality of the product and how mature the team is for such a young company. Despite the constraint of everyone having to work from home at the moment, the team is very responsive and people are always available to help.
What are you hoping to achieve here with us?
I was hoping to be the first Frenchman to join the company, but got beaten to it by Horia. Again. So I will focus on lesser goals like eradicating Java from the codebase or containerising all the things...mouahaha.
I also plan to learn a lot from all these smart people in the team and understand the difference between invoice financing and discounting...or is that the same thing? 🤔
